How Sleeping Habits Can Affect Your Testosterone Levels

Testosterone is an important androgen hormone that is found in both men and women. However, you will find much higher levels in men. There are many benefits associated with healthy levels of testosterone, such as an active libido, the ability to maintain energy levels and even build muscle mass. Low testosterone levels are generally associated with infertility, a decreased libido as well as emotional changes.

Recent studies have suggested that men who have poor sleeping habits can see their testosterone levels decrease by fifteen percent in just one week.

The Link between Sleeping Habits and Testosterone Levels

Although not all men require the same amount of sleep to function the next day, a good night’s rest is usually characterized between seven to nine hours a night for adult men. The reason why sleep is so important is because testosterone is produced at night while you sleep.  The testicles produce testosterone in cycles with the most active phase occurring during the phase of sleep that precedes the Rapid Eye Movement stage. The Rapid Eye Movement stage of sleep occurs throughout the night in bursts. The longer you have been asleep, the longer that phase of sleep will last. The testosterone levels will accumulate throughout the night, which is why men usually have a higher level in the morning.

A recent study published in the Journal of the Academic Medical Association studied this effect by observing ten healthy men for two weeks. During the first week, they slept between seven to nine hours. However, during the second week, they had ten hours of sleep for the first half of the week, and then five hours for the remainder of the week. To conclude the research, the testosterone levels of the men were measured after the second week. The researchers found that the testosterone levels had dropped between ten to fifteen percent after the week of sleep loss.

Why Achieving the Optimal Level of Testosterone Is Important

In addition to mitigating your chances of infertility, a decreased libido and emotional changes, the maintenance of optimal testosterone levels also have many health benefits associated with it, such as the following:

  • Cardiovascular health. Although research is still ongoing, some researchers believe that low testosterone levels may be linked to an erratic heartbeat or Thrombosis, a condition where the patient develops blood clots.
  • Weight control. Studies have suggested that men who have higher levels of testosterone are leaner and better able to build muscle strength.
  • Decreased risk of Osteoporosis. Links between decreased testosterone levels and a decline in bone density have been documented by health practitioners. This becomes a particular concern for aging men. In some cases, a physician may even recommend testosterone replacement therapy to help strengthen the bones.
